Dayton is an important regional center for the performing and visual arts. Among local arts organizations with national/international reputations are:

CULTURE WORKS: The Arts & Cultural Alliance of the Miami Valley

The largest source of arts and cultural funding in the Miami Valley. Culture Works serves as an umbrella organization for more than 400 performing and visual arts organizations in an 11 county region. Offices are located in the Metropolitan Arts Center in Downtown Dayton. (222-ARTS)

THE DAYTON ART INSTITUTE

The famous Italian Renaissance facade of the Dayton Art Institute overlooks the city. Spanning 5,000 years of human artistic endeavor, The Dayton Art Institute displays one of the finest art collections in the Midwest. The museum offers a variety of lectures, concerts and studio experiences for adults and children. Special events include the monthly friday pARTy, Just Jazz concerts, the annual Art Ball, as well as Dayton's favorite festival, Oktoberfest. Admission is free. (223-5277)

DAYTON BACH SOCIETY

One of the finest chorales in the nation, the Bach Society specializes in the music of J.S. Bach and the baroque era. Several subscription concerts are given a year, as well as the Holiday Messiah Sing-in, and other special events. (294-2224)

DAYTON BALLET

Recognized as one of the top eight regional ballet companies in the United States, in such illustrious company as the New York City Ballet, Dayton Ballet offers a full season of traditional and contemporary ballet, including special holiday performances of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker. Performances are usually held at the Victoria Theatre. (449-5060)

DAYTON CONTEMPORARY DANCE COMPANY

This internationally recognized dance troupe, commonly referred to as DCDC, presents the best in cutting-edge contemporary dance. The season includes both concert and cabaret performances, held at the Victoria Theatre. (228-3232)

DAYTON OPERA

Combining star-studded performances with education, Dayton Opera is gaining a reputation as a national leader for its outreach programs to involve previously underserved groups in the magic of live opera including children & minorities. Supratitles (via electronic readerboard) offer translations for all operas. Performances are held at the Schuster Center. (228-0662)

DAYTON PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

With a classical series, pop series, a Coffee Casuals concert series, children's concerts and chamber concerts, the Dayton Philharmonic presents a wide variety of musical entertainment during its September through May season. Area children also benefit greatly from regular orchestra concerts in schools. Performances are held at the Schuster Center. (228-3630)

DAYTON VISUAL ARTS CENTER

From its beginnings in 1991, the Dayton Visual Arts Center (DVAC) has worked to bring the community and local visual artists closer together through exhibitions and programs to celebrate local, contemporary visual art. The Dayton Visual Arts Center is located on the corner of Fourth & Ludlow in downtown Dayton. (224-3822)

THE FRAZE PAVILION

The Miami Valley's nationally-recognized summer home for the arts, the Fraze is a 4,000+ seat open pavilion located in Kettering's beautiful Lincoln Park. From international pop stars and jazz legends to the Sunset Symphony series, the Fraze swings from May to September. (297-3720)

THE HUMAN RACE THEATRE COMPANY

Suspense, drama, controversy, laughter - the Miami Valley's only resident professional theatre company produces and performs scripts that challenge actors and audiences alike. Performances are held at the Metropolitan Arts Center's Theatre in the Loft. (461-3823)

THE MUSE MACHINE

Dayton's innovative and nationally-acclaimed arts program for children and young adults. The Muse Machine brings professional musicians, singers, dancers and actors into the schools - and schoolchildren into the theatres - for a series of public performances throughout the year. The annual student presentation of a major Broadway musical at the Victoria Theatre is a highlight of the year. (461-1186)

THE SCHUSTER CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

Home to the Philharmonic and Opera, Dayton's stunning $125 million performing arts center is the center of Dayton - both physically and psychologically. The Mead Theatre (over 2500 seats) is also a prime venue for the biggest Broadway shows; while the adjoining Wintergarden truly is Dayton's living room. (228-3630)

THE VICTORIA THEATRE

From it's flagship Broadway on Main series to an innovative Young at Heart series for children, or any of its many other offerings including the Summer Film series, the Victoria is at the heart of Dayton. A restored monument of the 19th century, the gracious Victoria is helping lead Dayton's arts into the 21st century. (228-3630)
