When Urbana was established in 1805, the town became the county seat with the creation of Champaign County. The town’s founder, William Ward, named Urbana after the word urbanity. In November 2004, Congress recognized the Dayton region as the National Aviation Heritage Area, in honor of the region's leadership in our nation's aviation history. The Grimes Flying Lab Foundation—located in Urbana, was selected as one of the 10 historical sites included in the region.
